The house
Nippon Kodo traces its lineage to Takai Jinsei-do, an incense maker founded in 1575 — before Shakespeare had written Hamlet. The modern corporation was consolidated in 1965 when Takai Jinsei-do merged with several other heritage makers, producing what is today the largest and most internationally-distributed incense company in Japan. Its Tokyo headquarters near the Shimbashi/Ginza area sits on land the business has occupied in one form or another for centuries.
If you have ever walked into a Japanese souvenir shop anywhere in the world and seen a rack of Japanese incense, there is a good chance it was Nippon Kodo's. This is a feature, not a bug: they are the house that turned Japanese incense into something you can buy on a lunch break. For Western consumers, they are almost always the first point of contact.
Core product lines
Kayuragi (香樹林)
The modern, beginner-facing line: 14 cm sticks, 20–25 minute burns, gentle scents from sandalwood to yuzu to cherry blossom. If you are new to Japanese incense, this is almost certainly where you should begin. See our full Kayuragi review.
Mainichi Koh (毎日香)
"Every Day Incense." The workhorse daily line, with versions built around sandalwood (Mainichi Byakudan), green tea, and other staples. Inexpensive per stick, and a reliable choice for daily meditation.
Tokusen Awaji-Island (特選 淡路島)
A mid-tier line made on Awaji Island, Japan's historic center of incense production, with higher-quality wood and more careful blending than the Kayuragi range. A good second-purchase after you've lived with Kayuragi for a while.
Kyara Taikan / Kyara Kongo
Nippon Kodo's serious aloeswood and kyara-forward lines — expensive, elegant, and very much the real thing. Not for beginners, but worth knowing exist.
