How to Choose Your First Japanese Incense
Three questions — budget, scent preference, burn length — and you'll know exactly what to buy. This page is short on purpose.
Question 1: What's your budget?
- Under $15. Buy Nippon Kodo Kayuragi (assortment or single-scent). You will not do better in this price range.
- $15 – $30. Step up to Shoyeido Nokiba or Nippon Kodo Mainichi Byakudan for better sandalwood, or try a Shoyeido assorted starter set.
- $30 – $60. This is the sweet spot for entry-level aloeswood blends. Shoyeido Horin series (any of the five) is the usual recommendation.
- $60+. You're in serious jinkō territory. Yamadamatsu Jigoku-Dani or Shoyeido Premium range. Don't buy at this tier unless you've already burned at least one stick of byakudan and one stick of jinkō and know the difference.
Question 2: What do you think you like?
Don't overthink this. Pick the description that sounds most like you.
- "I want it soft and warm." → Sandalwood (byakudan). Try Kayuragi Sandalwood.
- "I want it fresh and bright." → Citrus-forward blend. Try Kayuragi Yuzu.
- "I want it forest-y and clean." → Hinoki (Japanese cypress). Try Kayuragi Hinoki or Shoyeido Haku-un.
- "I want it deep and a little mysterious." → Jinkō (aloeswood) blend. Try Shoyeido Kin-kaku ("Golden Pavilion") or any Horin series stick.
- "I want it sweet." → Cherry blossom, peach, or a floral. Try Kayuragi Sakura.
- "I don't know." → Buy the Kayuragi 8-scent assortment. Eight scents for the price of one stupid decision.
Question 3: How long do you want it to burn?
- ~15 min. Look for short, thin "less-smoke" sticks. Kayuragi (14 cm) is the reference.
- ~25 min. The standard daily-burn length. Most Shoyeido "Daily" series and Nippon Kodo Mainichi Byakudan fall here.
- ~45 min. Long sticks for ceremony or extended meditation. Shoyeido's longer Premium formats.
A gentle rule: burn shorter than you think you want. You can always light a second stick. You can't unburn one.
